“I love you.” She blurted out.
My heart skipped a beat. “What?”
“I… I love you; I am in love with you.” She said, making sure to be clear in her intentions.
“Do you mean it?” I asked her, turning to look at her.
She stood with her back against the wall, one foot propped under her. People passed by us, paying no real attention as they entered and exited the bathroom next to us.
“I do mean it. Do you love me?”
“I do. I love you.” My voice cracked as I said it. I cursed myself silently for letting that happen.
She smiled, but it looked half as fake as the one I’d given her moments before.
Her boyfriend exited the bathroom then and put his arm around her.
“You guys ready?” He asked.
“Yeah, let’s go,” I said.
We walked off and neither of us ever mentioned that day again.
